“Enough Thunder” or “How James Blake Made Me Want to Sob”

I am naturally inclined to listen to female vocalists but as of late have been drawn to an incredible crop of men who can emote with the power of ten women PMSing while watching Beaches. James Blake is one of these gems and, sadly, it’s taken me until now to start listening to his music. Maybe it was for the best as his music is really better listened to when you aren’t in the mood to play outside.

I Finally Made A New Couch to 5K Podcast! Week 4 Version 3 Is Ready For Download

I’ve been a bad podcaster lately and for that I apologize. Life, ya know? Totally gets in the way a lot of the time. You may ask, “Mia, have you figured out what you want to be when you grow up since you’ve been ‘so busy’ with your time?”. Sadly, the answer is still no but only because there are even more things I want to do now than I did in the past. In fact, I’m pretty sure I can add “Super Sleuth” to possible future professions thanks to my desire to hunt down and kick the shit out of the assholes who have repeatedly used my stolen identity information to open up credit lines in my name regardless of there being fraud flags listed on my social security number. I’m fairly certain I’ve tracked one of the offenders down – now it’s up to the respective fraud agencies to see if they want to go after them.

This has also made me want to speak with someone in the government about doing a better job of protecting consumers. Considering the technology available these days, I find it very hard to believe it’s too difficult for any companies handing out credit to figure out whether someone is using a child’s social security number in order to get a credit card. I also think it’s ridiculous that grocery stores are able to scan your driver’s license to make sure it’s valid and you are of age, but other retailers don’t have the same scanners to ensure someone maxing out the credit card they just applied for is who they say they are. Who do I speak to about this?

Ok, I know, I’ll get off of my soap box for now and just give you the goods you’ve been patiently waiting for. Without further ado, here is week 4 version 3 of the Chubby Jones Couch to 5k Podcast (now brought to you in Soundcloud form, so just click the downward arrow to get it to your desktop):

New Jams For Your Playlist: Kimya Dawson, Body Language & More

This post is brought to you by one of my gayest gay baby pictures from 1987:

Sub Swara’s remix of CREEP’s “You (ft. Nina Sky)” is hottt!

Carter Tanton (Tulsa/Lower Dens’ newest addition) sounds a bit Billy Corgan-ish in his single, “Horrorscope“, taken from his upcoming solo album, Freeclouds. For shits and giggles, here’s a second download, “Murderous Joy” – which I really like a lot.

Listen to the multi-genre-spanning new album from Body Language in its entirety over at NPR. It’s a little Vampire Weekend*, mostly Little Dragon – but all awesome (*I am not a Vampire Weekend fan, but stylistically, there are some similarities).

Kimya Dawson’s latest album drops tomorrow and the following single, “Driving Driving Driving” is a painfully fantastic look at parenthood and how terrifying the already-scary world becomes when you need to worry about the future after you’re gone.

Also hot, this video from New Look. Not only is it graphically cool but the song, “Nap On The Bow” is gorgeousness to chill to in any makeshift lounge setting:

Music Wrap-Up for Tuesday

This weekend was the first time I made it back to the Empty Bottle for a concert in what feels like ages. The last time I was there, I had gotten a little too friendly with a bottle of whiskey before what seemed to be a disappointing performance from Thao and Mirah (both of whom I normally love). Thankfully, for Sunday’s show I was able to walk a straight line and enjoy all of Wild Flag’s performance.

Before the show we went to Bite for dinner and man has that place changed! They classed it up a bit and the menu has stepped it up a notch. I’m sad I didn’t see their falafel on the menu but I ate the shit out of some amazing vegan stir fry.

When we finished dinner we went next door to the venue and were early enough to get aYellow Fever prime short-person spot on the top of the stairs. The openers, Yellow Fever, were great. I had seen the singer at Bite earlier and she was rocking some serious mom jeans with a pouffy blouse. At one point I guessed she was probably in a band but I definitely wasn’t expecting her to sound the way she did.

Wild Flag was rad as hell and the energy they shared on stage was infectious. Carrie Brownstein and Mary Timony faced off in their guitar stances while Janet and Rebecca kept the rhythm going dancing to themselves. That was definitely one of the best concertsWild Flag I’ve been to in a while and it got my psyched on venturing out during the winter months.

Dark, Sultry and Danceable: Anxiety in an MP3

There is something to be said about a song that can at once be dark and foreboding while also seductive. The single, “Pretend“, from electronic artist Emika gets an orchestral revamping of epic proportions by The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble.

The original tune is, if you can imagine, even darker – and almost a bit industrial. Both versions give me “the good kind” of anxiety. Grab a free download of the new version here. Check out the original here:

BBFE’s album, Mr. Machine, comes out in the US on October 25th and they’re tour hits Chicago that very same night at one of my favorite venues, The Empty Bottle, where tickets are cheap, bands are incredible and there is a photobooth.
