Ambient Swedish Electronic Act, Korallreven, Making US Debut

KorallrevenThe Swedes are continuing their not-so-hostile takeover of the U.S. music scene with dreamy electro pop duo, Korallreven. Starting next week, the band will be playing their first shows in the U.S. in support of their beautifully ambient 2011 debut, An Album By Korallreven.

The good news: The band will be making a stop in Chicago on March 6th @ Lincoln Hall.

The bad news: Victoria Bergsman won’t be making a guest appearance at that particular show. If you haven’t heard her in the bands Taken By Trees or The Concretes, you should definitely give them a spin too.

Check out and download their ethereal song, “Sa Sa Samoa” (ft. Juliana Barwick) below and download the “For Real For Sure For You” remix of the song.

Shearwater “Breaking The Yearlings”

I always forget how much I like Shearwater’s music. Thankfully, Sub Pop has brought it back to my attention and they’ve added “Breaking The Yearlings” to the beginning of their 2012 free download compilation. Stream below, download here.

Shearwater will be coming to Lincoln Hall with Sharon Van Etten (OMG!!!) for two dates in February. Here’s to hoping I can make both if not one of these nights.

New Sharon Van Etten “Serpents”

There are very few women I really want – or I should say hope are gay (of course excluding the ones who are already out). Sharon Van Etten is one of those ladies that I look at and say, “Pretty please – can we have this one?” And it’s not that I want to get tied up to the bedpost with her guitar strap or anything, it’s just that she’s so talented and…I’m going to shoot myself in the foot here…she just looks like she would make a great lesbian. Like, I bet she owns a giant mug devoted to drinking tea out of and a fern she was keeping an eye on for a friend but then it ended up staying at her place because she took great care of it.

Actually, now that I think about it – a friend of mine IMed me the other day with just this, “Hi! watch this. How can she not be gay!?” And of course my response was, “I LOVE HER”. But yeah, not gay – just loved by the lesbians.

Here is her new single, “Serpents” from her upcoming release, Tramps. She’ll be playing two shows at Lincoln Hall Feb. 16th & 17th – get your tickets now.

Dark, Sultry and Danceable: Anxiety in an MP3

There is something to be said about a song that can at once be dark and foreboding while also seductive. The single, “Pretend“, from electronic artist Emika gets an orchestral revamping of epic proportions by The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble.

The original tune is, if you can imagine, even darker – and almost a bit industrial. Both versions give me “the good kind” of anxiety. Grab a free download of the new version here. Check out the original here:

BBFE’s album, Mr. Machine, comes out in the US on October 25th and they’re tour hits Chicago that very same night at one of my favorite venues, The Empty Bottle, where tickets are cheap, bands are incredible and there is a photobooth.
