Emily Wells and Dark Dark Dark: Chicken Soup for a Lonely Soul

Emily Wells and Dark Dark Dark are two of the most impressive live acts I’ve seen in ages; last Friday’s show at The Knitting Factory has been playing over and over in my head.

Emily opened and took everyone, myself included, by surprise with her live-looping one-woman band consisting of haunting yet hypnotic vocals, violin, drums and at least one, if not more, instrument added for good measure.

At some point in the show, I couldn’t help but feel slightly self-conscious about my inability to stop staring at her. I really just couldn’t wait to see what she would do next. If you ever have the opportunity to see her perform live, run to get the tickets. Do not walk. Check out some of the audio I caught from Friday’s show:

When Dark Dark Dark took the stage there was a friendly college kid standing next to me who had never heard their music before. I was trying to describe their sound but anything I could have possibly said wouldn’t have been able to portray it accurately.

I didn’t need my new acquaintance to tell me how he was enjoying the show. When I turned my head to catch a glimpse of his face, his eyes were wide, his mouth was half-open and his hand was clutching his other hand next to his chest. When he caught me looking at him, he just smiled and immediately asked for more suggestions. So, I hope he’s reading this and remembers to check out Wye Oak, Lia Ices and Holly Miranda.

In case you’re wondering, this is the song currently breaking my heart on repeat:

“Haze.Boogie.Life.” Mykki Blanco Gets Sinister

Mikki BlancoAll I know is, I’m gonna be touchin’ my toes and gettin’ wild when Mykki Blanco takes the stage at the Terrorbird CMJ party at Cake this Wednesday.

And in other news, I would like to be called Haze Boogie from now on.

As If Janet Jackson’s “If” Weren’t Hot Enough You Can Now Pop ‘n’ Lock To It

I’m a huge fan of Janet Jackson’s song, “If”. Not only is it playfully sexy with an equally hot music video but it was also the song my hip-hop aerobics class was learning the choreography to back when I apparently had no shame and convinced myself to use my gym membership.

Now, I don’t have a gym membership and most of my aerobic exercises involve wandering the aisles at Duane Reade. But it’s all good home-skillets. Kaytra Laboom has put together a fantastically original chilled out poplockin’ remix of Ms. Jacksonifyanasty’s original.

Graph Rabbit Releases Album & Video Just In Time For Fall

Graph Rabbit

The first show I went to as an official New Yorker was Graph Rabbit at the Bowery Electric. The venue was dim and intimate with enough people heading in late that I was able to get to the front of the stage.

Austin Donohue’s voice is like a crisp, folky version of Thom Yorke – which I think you’ll be able to hear in “Make It Stop”. I have no clue how he and his analog synth playing bandmate, Shy Kedmi, (who in person bears a little bit of a Fred Armisten resemblance) were able to get through the video without cracking up during their staring competition.

Snowblind is up on iTunes ready for downloading now.
